Got Questions? We've Got Answers.

Q: How long has MNSOBA been around? MNSOBA is brand new. We have yet to hold a first organizational meeting to select board members and officers. We plan to launch officially on October 25, 2024. Members who join before that point will be considered “Founding Members.”

Q: Who can join the MNSOBA? A: For-profit businesses operating in the outdoor recreation sector and associations comprised of for-profits operating in the for-profit outdoor recreation sector. This includes, but is not limited to, manufacturers, retailers, outfitters, guides, and related service providers.

Q: Are only Minnesota-based businesses allowed in MNSOBA? A: No. If your business has a significant workforce presence within MN, you can join the Alliance. An example would be REI.

Q: What does membership cost? A: Membership fees vary depending on the size of your organization. We don’t want cost to hinder participation, so we have developed a system that considers the ability to contribute. Please get in touch with us for specific pricing information.

Q: How can SOBAs support workforce development in the outdoor industry? A: SOBAs can partner with the Minnesota Outdoor Recreation Industry Partnership and educational institutions, offer training programs, and share job opportunities among members. We also can support the creation of pathways for young people to enter the outdoor recreation workforce.

Q: Can a SOBA help my business with marketing and promotion? A: SOBAs can promote member businesses through social media channels and at industry events. SOBAs also organize collaborative marketing campaigns to showcase outdoor recreation opportunities at trade shows and similar events.

Q: How does a SOBA work towards making outdoor recreation more inclusive? A: SOBAs can support initiatives that increase access to outdoor spaces for underrepresented communities, promote outdoor media and marketing diversity, and encourage inclusive hiring practices within the industry.

Q: How can I get involved beyond just being a member? A: Members can run for the board, join committees, participate in advocacy efforts, speak at events, or mentor other businesses. We encourage active participation to maximize the benefits of membership.
